Genesis (camera)

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

The Genesis is Panavision’s high-end digital movie camera, which uses a proprietary, full frame 35mm-width, 1.78:1 (16:9) aspect ratio, 12.4-megapixel RGB filtered CCD. It was first used by a feature crew to shoot Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns and was shortly followed up thereafter by the World War I film Flyboys. However, the CGI-heavy nature of these two movies meant that ultimately the comedy Scary Movie 4 was the first theatrically released feature sourced primarily from the Genesis camera. Genesis has since been used by cinematographer Dean Semler for shooting Click and Apocalypto.

Background

Unlike the 2/3″ 3-CCD RGB imaging system used in the CineAlta HD-900F (used in Attack of the Clones), the Genesis uses a single 12.4 megapixel CCD chip with the same width as a Super 35mm film frame. The “Panavized” CineAltas didn’t use Panavision’s existing range of 35mm film lenses and have different depth-of-field characteristics.

Most photographic lenses designed for film cameras cannot be adapted to work on 3-chip video cameras. In many cases, the prism block simply leaves no room for the rear element of the lens. In cases where the lens does fit, the resulting optical aberrations created by the prism (primarily spherical) would destroy image quality. Apart from this, the sensors on a “2/3 inch” video camera are closer in size to a 16mm film frame and so would produce a similar depth of field.

Panavision originally tried to overcome this problem with optical adaptors that fitted between the cine lens and the video camera but these have all produced an unacceptable drop in image quality. Most productions using the Sony HDCAM cameras therefore used lenses of Zeiss, Angenieux, Canon and Fujinon.

Apart from this, there were a number of operational problems with both the lenses and cameras used for Attack of the Clones, and so for Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas severed his long-standing relationship with Panavision in 2003, obtaining newer-model Sony HDC-F950 cameras and lenses from Plus8Digital instead.

In an attempt to address these and other problems, Panavision followed this up in 2004 with the Genesis, a full bandwidth (4:4:4) camera with improved colorimetry and sensitometry-related specs and, probably most importantly, a Super 35 mm film-sized recording area, thus making it focally compatible with regular Cine Primo lenses and giving a true 35 mm depth of field.

Technical specification

The Genesis uses a 12.4 megapixel CCD chip, arranged in a 5760×2160 horizontally RGB filtered array. The vertical resolution is cut in half to 1080 by pixel binning, so the final output pixel resolution is 1920×1080, about 2/3 the resolution of a 2k film scan. The chip has an HDTV-style 16:9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio, similar in size to Super35 3-Perf film. The CCD active area is .930 in. x .523 in. This is a significant breakthrough in that it allows just about any Panavision spherical 35mm cine lens to be used. However there are as yet unanswered questions about the resultant color quality, since single-chip NTSC and PAL color cameras using the exact same color-stripe sampling technique have always performed poorly compared to equivalent 3-chip models. The main imaging module of the Genesis is made by Sony, but the exact relationship between the two companies is unclear, since their joint partnership was dissolved in 2004 with Panavision’s re-purchase of the 8% shareholding Sony bought in 2000.

The Genesis can record in a custom Panalog color space, which is a log color space that it is also 4:4:4 unlike traditional HD. The tone-curve is different than the Cineon log format used for film post-production, but preserves highlight detail that would be lost with typical video gamma correction.

There have also been numerous complaints about the small black and white viewfinders available, which are virtually useless for critical focus. To address this, Panavision uses the Sony HDVF-C30W TFT color LCD viewfinder (960×540 pixels), which is compatible with both the CineAlta and the Genesis cameras. Digital cinema camera competitors to the Genesis the DALSA Origin and D-20 incorporate a reflex optical viewfinder to address this concern.

Nestled in the sylvan environs of the Brahmaputra valley where the beautiful rendezvous of water and land throws up myriad colours, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), which was set up at Numaligarh in the district of Golaghat (Assam) in accordance with the provisions made in the historic Assam Accord signed on 15th August 1985, has been conceived as a vehicle for speedy industrial and economic development of the region.

The 3 MMTPA Numaligarh Refinery Limited was dedicated to the nation by the erstwhile Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri A. B. Vajpayee on 9th July, 1999.NRL has been able to display creditable performance since commencement of commercial production in October, 2000. With its concern, commitment and contribution to socio-economic development of the state combined with a track record of continuous growth, NRL has been conferred the status of Mini Ratna PSU.

The present authorized capital of the company is Rs. 1000 crores and paid up capital is Rs. 735.63 crores. The shareholding pattern as on 31-03-2006 is given below:

Tazkiah

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Tazkiah or Tazkiah-tun-nafs (purification of the soul) is the central aim of the Sufi Muslim path. It is the process of transforming the nafs (carnal self or desires) from its deplorable state of ego-centredness through various psychospiritual stages to the purity and submission to the will of Allah. Although some have considerably more, most Sufi orders have adopted seven maqamat (maqam pl. maqamat, refers to a station on the voyage towards spiritual transformation), the Sufi’s journey begins with Nafs-al-Ammara (self-accusing soul) and ends in Nafs-al-Mutma’inna (satisfied soul) - although some Sufis’s final stage is Nafs-as-Safiya wa Kamila (soul restful and perfected in Allah’s presence). The term is conceptually synonymous with Tasawwuf, Islah al-Batini etc.

Another concept which is closely related but not identical is Tazkiah-al-Qalb, or cleansing of the heart, which is also a necessary spiritual discipline for travellers on the Sufi path. The aim is the erasure of everything that stands in the way of purifying Allah’s love (Ishq).

Tazkiyya starts with “Verily deeds are according to intentions” and ends with “Worship Him as though you see Him”, the reference being to the first hadith in Sahih Bukhari and the oft referred hadith famously known as the hadith of Gibril in Sahih Muslim.

It must be remembered that tazkiah is not a hal (state), which is something that descends from Allah into a seeker’s heart, without him being able to repel it when it comes, or to attract it when it goes, by his own effort. Tazkiah is a continuous process of purification to maintain spiritual health. Similar to the process of maintaining physical health, any lapse in the regimen can cause one to lose their previous gains, and thus caution must always be used to not deviate from the path.

Dave Clarke (politician)

Jump to: navigation, search

Dave Clarke (born 1960) is a municipal politician in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He served on the Kingston City Council from 1994 to 2000, and was a candidate for the Reform Party in the 1997 federal election.

Clarke was born in Brockville, Ontario, and was raised in Woodstock. He became active in radio broadcasting when still in high school, and worked in radio and television for sixteen years after his graduation. He was a news anchor for CKWS Television from 1987 to 1993, when he switched to sales at CIZ radio (KWS, 10 May 1997).

He first ran for public office in the 1994 Kingston municipal election, seeking a council seat in the St. Lawrence Ward. Clarke ran on a pro-business platform, claiming that the previous council had alienated city business interests (Kingston Whig-Standard, 12 October 1994). He also supported regional amalgamation. He was narrowly elected, defeating rival candidate Mike Murphy by twenty votes (KWS, 15 November 1994). In 1997, he was one of only three council members to vote against a bill extending employee benefits for same-six couples (KWS, 19 June 1997).

In January 1997, Clarke defeated Grey Kennedy to win the Reform Party nomination for Kingston and the Islands (KWS, 15 January 1997). He had previously been approached to run for the Progressive Conservative Party (KWS, 10 May 1997). In the general election, he finished third against Liberal incumbent Peter Milliken.

Shortly before the 1997 municipal election, the provincial government of Mike Harris amalgamated the city of Kingston with a number of surrounding municipalities. Clarke was re-elected to council by winning a seat on the newly-created Board of Control, a powerful four-member board elected by the region at large. In early 1998, he was appointed to the Kingston police services board.

Following an extended period of tension between the Board of Control and the rest of city council, the council voted 15-1 to abolish the board in September 1999. Clarke was the only member to vote for retention (KWS, 8 September 1999). He spoke out against council spending on a homeless shelter later in the year, arguing that Kingston did not have a homeless program and that many of those using the shelter were youths who did not need it (KWS, 10 December 1999). In 2000, he supported the creation of the Canadian Alliance (KWS, 28 March 2000).

He campaigned for re-election in the 2000 municipal election in Council Ward Five (Portsmouth), but lost to Beth Pater. He sought re-election in 2003, and lost to Pater a second time.
